As English legal terminology becomes more widely available internationally, the meanings of English legal terms are becoming established both in international business practice and in court decisions. This widespread use and stability, in turn, makes it easier for businessmen and international civil servants to choose English when drafting agreements and other legal documents, and more difficult to choose another language. By defining in depth the legal terms of other languages and comparing them to English, these legal terms become clearer and more understandable and therefore easier for international parties to accept. Therefore, this dictionary would also have the advantage of strengthening the many legal languages of the world. That`s why TransLegal has partnered with leading law schools around the world on a unique project to create an online multilingual legal dictionary that combines legal languages from around the world with a single English legal dictionary. Obviously, each country has its own laws and legal concepts (legal terminology), many of which cannot be translated into English by simply using “equivalent” Anglo-American legal terminology. Nevertheless, business people around the world need to understand the laws of the countries in which they operate. Therefore, the lawyers who help them navigate these local laws need to be equipped with language that their clients and in-house lawyers can understand. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a guideline used to describe the achievements of foreign language learners in Europe and increasingly in other countries (e.g. Colombia and the Philippines).

It was produced by the Council of Europe. Its main objective is to provide a method of learning, teaching and assessment that applies to all languages in Europe. Our corpus-based dictionary contains definitions that are noted at level B2 of the CEFR. With simple language to clarify terms rather than simplify them, complex legal concepts are made more accessible to English learners. The CEFR provides a common basis for language teaching in the key areas of curriculum development, the design of teaching and learning materials and the assessment of foreign language competences. One of the most important achievements has been to develop a comprehensive set of descriptions at the level of the components of language proficiency at all levels across a range of competencies. For example, a B2 level English learner may perform a number of relatively complex tasks, including questions about clarifying when following a presentation, understanding the general meaning of routine and non-routine correspondence, and writing reports and correspondence. After receiving the list of essential local legal terms identified by the partner university, TransLegal compares the essential legal terms in the national language with the translated terms that the partner university created in Phase 2 and determines which terms are not covered. TransLegal has been producing the world`s leading legal English documents (see below) for over 25 years and has recently launched a new platform that provides access to our online database of legal English resources through a powerful search function. The online service allows the user to search for a legal term in English that provides results in the form of relevant documents from TransLegal`s online legal dictionary, online language exercises, videos and sound recordings and other legal documents in English. These documents are designed for non-native speakers of the English language and are at a B2 level on the Council of Europe`s CEFR scale.

TransLegal now plans to further expand this search tool by introducing local language features. This allows the user to search for legal terms in their own language and get results in the form of English legal terms, which are a translation of the local term or an English legal term closely related to it. It will therefore be a powerful online multilingual legal dictionary and more, as the user will not only receive a translation of the local term, but will also have access to explanations of the associated English legal term, as well as common usage errors, pronunciation recordings, language exercises for training, etc. Through links to relevant legal terms, language exercises and videos, the online dictionary offers users quick access to highly relevant resources and documents. For example, exercises related to English terms returned when searching for a local language term provide the user with direct access to TransLegal`s online courses and the features provided therein. Videos and sound recordings also provide the user with valuable tools for pronunciation assistance. As part of a unique programme of partnerships with universities around the world, TransLegal makes its database on legal English available free of charge and on an ongoing basis to students and professors at partner universities. As part of their legal training, selected students will produce material in the local language under the supervision of the faculty of the cooperating university, including translations of English legal terms, which can be searched in TransLegal`s database, in their national language and, if necessary, annotations explaining the differences between legal terms and systems.
